A special gift

These are the teddies for the occasions that get a speech: a big birthday, an anniversary, a thank-you that a card cannot carry. All of them are handmade, many are limited editions, and all of them are of the kind where the quality is obvious at first touch.

Handmade matters here for a practical reason. A machine-made bear looks like every other one; a hand-finished Charlie Bears or Steiff has its own face, and the person receiving it will notice. Many are numbered limited editions, and once a Charlie Bears design has retired from the current collection it only gets harder to find, which makes the gift better with time rather than worse.

It is usually worth choosing by the face first. With a handmade bear, that is the part that varies most from one to the next.
